Ensuring that all children learn to become proficient spellers requires schools to successfully teach the National Curriculum Spelling content across all year groups. This can be a significant challenge! Support for Spelling helps schools meet this challenge in a flexible manner.
Schools are taught and supported to use the very best practice that will support children to spell with confidence.
The Support for Spelling Sequence
Children experience six units per term. These are mapped out for practitioners from Y2-Y6.
Exploration- Children are empowered to explore words and notice what is happening within them. Practitioners are given the words, answers and subject knowledge to support this effectively.
Word bank work- Children see the teacher model how to implement 'The Spelling Toolkit' and then have time to use the toolkit for themselves.
Reactivate- Here, the children become teachers and spot as many errors as possible whilst revisiting content from a previous unit
Practise time- Children complete a simple activity to reinforce learning from the current unit.
As schools develop confidence with the approach, they then begin to implement 'The Essential Extras' at a pace that suits them.
Schools are supported to create rigorous sequences of learning and apply the ‘Spelling Toolkit.’
Where there is additional capacity, schools can also implement the ‘Essential Extras’ to achieve even greater success.
By accessing the training material and supportive planning tool, practitioners will be able to create highly effective spelling sequences and lessons.
If schools require further support to sequence the National Curriculum content, they can access the Support for Spelling overview documents that map out the curriculum content across Years 2-6. This will ensure practitioners know exactly what to teach and when as they implement the Support for Spelling approach.
To help save even more time, schools can access the prepared banks of words for the exploration sessions. These help to ensure practitioners provide the right words at the right time.
